winter food

what do you eat (& do) to keep yourself warm on days with -10° celcius or less? up to last week i felt like eating things like avocado, coconut & sweet potato (fat & carbs) to keep my body warm. a few days ago i found that even at this chilliness i feel better on eating fruits & greens. low fat.

this is what i had today:

  • 1,5 ananas (not at once, of course 😉 )
  • about 200g miner’s lettuce, mizuna & other salad
  • 2 small persimmon
  • 1 medjool date
  • 1 plantain
  • 6 leaves of savoy cabbage
  • 1 apple
  • 1 carob bean
  • about 7 BIG leaves of curly kale
  • 2 oranges
  • about 30-40 big blackberry leaves

since i am somewhat inspired by “green for life” from victoria boutenko which i just have read, part of the greens had been blended: plantain with savoy cabbage turned out to be really yummy! but i still prefer to eat the things as they are … the best meal today was eating plantain & cabbage in the sun in front of our house 🙂

anyway, what really helps to keep me warm isn’t food but exercise. move! i do 3 to 4 small workouts a day, 5 to 20 minutes each, on the stepper or doing sit-ups, pushups, stretching or something.

one hundred push ups

inspired by jademond i take the challenge … will i be able to do 100 push ups within 6 weeks?

starting at level 1 (distressing but true: i only manage 2 “good form” push ups …) i will better do knee push ups the first days 🙂

sunny autumn weekend

started yesterday with our weekly western riding lesson. my third lesson. with sheza. walk and trot. an exercise in insistence & willpower, making sheza go where i want her to go. & of course physical exercise: sitting trot … a western saddle is more comfortable than an english one but … well, i still cannot sit 😉
anyway i can’t wait for next saturday!

in the afternoon i was skating in the local nature reserve. m. came along with her run bike. sun was shining & we had so much fun going up & down the hills 🙂

on sunday we went to the farmers market at gut wulksfelde … just to find out that i mixed the days up: the market has been yesterday. disappointing. but we took the chance & enjoyed the warm & sunny day, making a walk around the farm, collecting comfrey, playing at the playground. then spent the rest of our sun-day playing, reading & having a picnic in our yard.

how wonderful life can be 🙂

i am really happy to see how the days are getting longer and that it is becoming a little bit warmer these days! spring is coming 🙂

for many weeks now i feel i need much more sleep … usually i perfectly get along with 5 to 6 hours of sleep, but in winter … so dark and cold … well, it is just natural to go to sleep when it is dark, instead of staying up and trying to work. fortunately, i know that my energy will rise again!

i also find it harder to do some sports in winter. when it is really cold outside, i don’t even want to leave house for a walk. usually, i am jumping on my trampoline in the morning, first thing on getting up, and doing some exercises afterwards, like sit-ups and pushups. a few weeks ago i bought bar-bells to do some more exercises for my neck and shoulders, but somehow i don’t manage to use them regularly.

since yesterday, we have a pull-up bar in out kitchen door. up to now, i don’t even make ONE pull-up but hopefully this will change soon 🙂

the kids love the bar … everybody uses it whenever passing!

of course there are lots of things … i like to call them everyday-sports … like carrying my daughter, running to follow her when biking, carrying crates of fruit and so on … but this does not seem to be enough. how do YOU exercise? how do you make it to exercise enough, especially together with small children?
